What is Proposition 65?Updated 17 days ago

Proposition 65 (formally known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) is a California law that requires businesses to notify Californians by providing warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm that may be found in products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By requiring that this information be provided, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about their exposure to these chemicals.

The list includes approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987, and it must be updated at least once a year by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).
